RPG Maker fuels creativity among Filipino game developers
Filipino aspiring game developers are turning to RPG Maker, a user-friendly tool offering an alternative to more complex development engines.
Aspiring video game developers in the Philippines are using RPG Maker, a game development tool designed to simplify the creation process, as an alternative to more complex engines commonly used in the industry.
While platforms such as Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot offer extensive development capabilities, RPG Maker provides built-in tools that allow users to create playable games without advanced programming skills.
The software is primarily designed for role-playing games, with features for building maps, designing characters, developing combat systems and creating storylines. Users with programming experience can also customize projects through scripts and plugins, using Ruby in older versions and JavaScript in newer releases.
Despite its focus on role-playing games, developers have used the software to produce titles in other genres, including horror, adventure and experimental games.
Among the better-known projects is Corpse Party, a Japanese horror series that began as an RPG Maker game in 1996 before developing into a franchise with multiple remakes.
Another example is Yume Nikki, a surreal adventure game known for its dreamlike setting and open-ended exploration. Its unconventional approach helped it build a following among players.
Fan-made projects have also demonstrated the engine’s capabilities. Pokémon Uranium, developed using RPG Maker XP, combined official Pokémon characters with original creatures. Released in 2016 after nine years of development, it reportedly reached 1.5 million downloads and received a nomination for the Game Awards’ Best Fan Creation category. Development later stopped following takedown notices from Nintendo.
More recent projects, such as Beloved Rapture, have continued to use older versions of the software. Developed with RPG Maker 2003, the role-playing game draws inspiration from classic titles and features turn-based combat and a story involving trauma, friendship and existential themes.
Filipino developers explore the platform
The tool has also found users among Filipino independent developers, including creators who may not have access to expensive development resources or formal training.
At the PGDX 2026 event in July, Lily Adventuresses, developed by DagitabSoft using RPG Maker 2000, was included among the Indie Game Stars.
Other locally developed projects are available through independent game distribution platforms such as itch.io.
These include Boundless Thorns, an ongoing role-playing game about a rebel and a prince whose journeys become connected, and Buhay Educ, described as a roguelike game following a young woman pursuing a career as an English teacher.
MartholemyLabs has also developed Pilipinas, an educational game designed to teach players about the country’s geography through an interactive map featuring provincial capitals, independent cities and tourist destinations.
RPG Maker has also been used for projects beyond conventional gaming. Studio Moonchalk has produced films using the software, including Second Love, which the studio said became the first RPG Maker animated film selected for an international film festival.
Accessibility and creative limitations
RPG Maker’s relatively straightforward tools have helped make game development more accessible, but the platform also has limitations.
Its ease of use has contributed to a large number of projects with limited originality or development effort, including games that rely heavily on existing assets without significant customization.
However, developers have also used the software’s constraints to experiment with storytelling, gameplay and visual styles that extend beyond traditional role-playing games.
For independent creators, the platform offers a way to develop and test ideas without first mastering more complicated software. Its scripting and plugin capabilities also allow experienced users to expand projects beyond the engine’s built-in features.
As interest in independent game development grows, RPG Maker remains one option for Filipino creators seeking to turn concepts into playable projects.
Its continued use suggests that access to game development does not necessarily depend on sophisticated tools, but also on the ideas and effort of the people creating the games.

PT Sports taps Dawn Bulls to compete in November Dota 2 tournaments
PT Sports has enlisted Dawn Bulls as its temporary Dota 2 lineup, replacing three players ahead of two international tournaments this month.
Philippine esports organization PT Sports has temporarily replaced three members of its main Dota 2 lineup with the Dawn Bulls roster as it prepares for two international tournaments this month.
Players Abed, Elmisho and FCR are taking a break, with Dawn Bulls members Shad, sanctity-, Xibbe, yamich and Se representing PT Sports throughout November.
The temporary lineup will compete in the DreamLeague Division 2 Series 5 qualifier, scheduled for Nov. 6 to 19, before moving on to BLAST Slam 9, which is listed in the supplied information as running from Nov. 20 to 29.
PT Sports said it would announce its main roster once the lineup changes are finalized.
“This roster has proven that they can compete among the best and have built a foundation despite having a diverse set of players. PT Sports is excited to support their campaign in DreamLeague Division 2 and the awaited BLAST Slam IX, where the best Dota 2 teams in the world will face off,” said Isaac James Alfon, the team’s manager.
DreamLeague Division 2 Series 5 will feature 16 teams competing on Europe West servers. The tournament will begin with a best-of-three group stage, followed by double-elimination playoffs, with $50,000 in prize money.
The top three teams will qualify for DreamLeague Season 30, scheduled for Dec. 2 to 13. The main tournament will feature 24 teams competing for a $750,000 prize pool and ESL Pro Tour points for the 2026-27 season.
ESL FACEIT Group introduced Division 2 in 2025 to provide second-tier teams with a route into the DreamLeague competition, which began in 2013.
Under tournament rules allowing only one team per organization in each event, Dawn Bulls will serve as PT Sports’ representative in the Division 2 competition.
BLAST Slam 9 will follow the qualifier, carrying a reported $1 million prize pool. The schedule means Dawn Bulls could compete in tournaments for most of November before the next DreamLeague season begins.
PT Sports, the sports and esports division of PlayTime Entertainment, fields competitive Dota 2 players in international competitions.

Beyond screens: Looking at the deeper causes of school violence in the Philippines
School tragedies renew calls for child protection, while debate grows over whether gaming and social media restrictions address deeper causes of youth violence.
Recent school tragedies in the Philippines have renewed calls for stronger safeguards for children, but the government’s response has also raised questions about whether restrictions on video games and social media are addressing the factors behind youth violence.
Three incidents in schools during the second half of the year have drawn attention to the involvement of young perpetrators and the challenges facing families, educators and authorities in preventing such cases.
Government agencies, in response, have moved to tighten oversight of online platforms. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) pressed Reddit and Discord to establish local offices, threatening a nationwide ban if they failed to comply.
Both platforms remain accessible. Discord was briefly blocked before authorities reversed the move following public criticism.
The measures have added to a debate over whether restricting digital platforms and entertainment is an effective way to protect children, particularly when other potential contributors to youth violence remain difficult to address.
Among the issues raised are online gambling, limited access to mental healthcare, unsecured firearms and inadequate parental supervision.
Online gambling and its effects
Online gambling has expanded the reach of betting by allowing users to wager through mobile devices rather than visiting physical gambling venues.
Platforms including Bingo Plus, 789, MegaFUNalo and Luckpot are among those accredited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).
But the activity can carry serious financial and social consequences, including debt, psychological distress, strained relationships and problems at work. Such pressures can also expose vulnerable individuals to circumstances that may lead to criminal activity.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a ban on Philippine offshore gaming operators, or POGOs, in 2024, targeting offshore gambling operations. Domestic online gambling platforms, however, continued operating.
In 2025, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri filed a bill seeking to prohibit online gambling, describing it as a “silent epidemic” affecting Filipino families. The proposed measure remains pending.
The contrast has prompted questions about the government’s priorities in regulating digital activities, particularly as authorities consider restrictions on platforms used for communication and entertainment.
A widening mental health gap
The state of mental healthcare is another concern, especially for children and adolescents dealing with emotional distress, bullying and other pressures.
An estimated 12.5 million Filipinos have a mental health condition, with depression affecting most of them, according to figures cited in the provided material. The country has only 1,821 mental health workers to serve this population, many of them concentrated in and around Metro Manila.
The shortage leaves many communities, particularly in rural areas, with limited access to professional support.
Schools also face the challenge of addressing bullying, which can contribute to anxiety and emotional distress among students. Research cited in the material has identified revenge and deep-seated anxiety as possible factors in school violence.
These concerns point to the need for accessible psychological services and early intervention, rather than relying solely on restrictions imposed after incidents occur.
The risks of unsecured firearms
Access to firearms has also emerged as a concern following a school shooting in Tacloban, in which a suspect reportedly obtained a service firearm belonging to an aunt who was a police officer.
The relative faced criminal complaints and administrative sanctions over alleged negligence, according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
The incident highlighted the risks posed by improperly secured firearms in homes, particularly where children and adolescents may have access to them.
The Philippines has laws regulating firearm ownership and possession under Republic Act No. 10591. But the incident raises questions about compliance, household storage practices and the enforcement of existing safeguards.
The role of parents and guardians
Parental supervision is another part of the debate over children’s safety, both online and offline.
Children who lack guidance may be left to navigate digital platforms, social pressures and emotional difficulties without adequate support. Abuse and neglect can further compound their vulnerability.
Authorities have urged parents and guardians to monitor children’s internet use, but digital restrictions alone cannot replace consistent supervision and communication within families.
Proposals requiring age verification on online platforms have also raised concerns about privacy and civil liberties, particularly if broad restrictions affect users who rely on these services for work, education and communication.
A broader approach to child protection
The recent school incidents have intensified scrutiny of how the government responds to threats facing young people. But focusing primarily on video games and social media risks overlooking other problems that require sustained attention.
Online gambling, gaps in mental healthcare, access to unsecured firearms, bullying and inadequate parental supervision each present distinct challenges. Addressing them requires more than restrictions on digital platforms.
Reddit and Discord, for example, are also used for professional collaboration and communication. Measures that threaten access to such services could affect communities and workers who depend on them for legitimate purposes.
Protecting children requires a broader approach that combines effective law enforcement with mental health support, responsible firearm storage, school-based intervention and stronger family involvement.
The challenge for authorities is to identify the circumstances that put young people at risk and develop safeguards that address those conditions without treating digital entertainment as a substitute explanation for more complex social problems.
